Hatfield Broad Oak was well-established by the time of the Norman Conquest, and its Domesday Book population ranked it as the ninth largest settlement in Essex.

Eponymous Oak:

The village's name dates back to at least 1136, and the iconic "Doodle Oak" in Hatfield Forest, with a circumference of 18.2 metres. Its roots date back to 950AD, witnessed centuries of history, and found mention in the Domesday Book. However, in 1858, its leaves fell for the final time, marking the end of its nearly millennium-long life. Today, markers in the woodland commemorate its legacy.

Yet, nearby, a smaller oak tree stands, believed to have sprouted from the original's root.
