Much of the Parsonage Estate is built on a portion of Birchanger Wood, an ancient woodland with a history spanning over 1,000 years. This woodland serves as a reminder of the area's early history as a hunting forest.

The estate is also home to Birchwood High School, which has a notable history. Originally established as Margaret Dane Girls' School, it became co-educational in the late 1980s after merging with Hadham Hall School many people suggested a new name with one suggestion naming it Birchwood, relating it to nearby Birchanger Wood, and in 1990 the school reopened under the new name, Birchwood High School.
