Originally established as Margaret Dane Girls' School, it became co-educational in the late 1980s after merging with Hadham Hall School many people suggested a new name with one suggestion naming it Birchwood, relating it to nearby Birchanger Wood, and in 1990 the school reopened under the new name, Birchwood High School.
