Welcome to Takeley, a village enriched in history and surrounded by beautiful landscapes. With its intriguing origins, caring community, and convenient location, Takeley offers residents and visitors alike a delightful place to call home.

Origin of the Name

Takeley's name has sparked various theories over the years. Some believe it originated from "Teg-Ley," referencing sheep clearing, while others suggest it may be linked to the Saxon lord Taecca or denote a settlement next to open forest, nodding to the Forest of Essex.

Historical Insights

First recorded by the Normans in 1086–87, Takeley's boundaries once spanned approximately 8 miles, covering an area of 3,000 acres. However, with the development of Stansted Airport, the village has since lost nearly a third of its land.

The former Cooper's End, once part of Takeley, was demolished to make way for Stansted Airport's cargo area. Access to the airport from Cooper's End was temporarily closed but later reopened, with the construction of Cooper's End roundabout marking a significant change in the village's landscape.
